State of the Future

The FutureStates website dares us to wonder what our nation will look like 10, 20, 50, or 100 years in the future. It's a worthy exercise and comes with some really sharp indie-films to get the mind moving.

Yesterday, I wondered what future generations will say about some of the things we take for granted. Then I made a few predictions of my own. Today, why not consider more thorough descriptions of our future?

Austin Brown at The Long Now Blog pointed to a great site called Futurestates.

What will become of America in five, 25, or even 50 years from today? FUTURESTATES is a series of 11 fictional mini-features exploring possible future scenarios through the lens of today’s global realities. Immerse yourself in the visions of these independent prognosticators as they project a future of their own imagining. (From the About)

All the best science fiction is about posing questions about the future, but these films are more personal. They’re mostly geared toward imaging America’s future. I’ve only scratched the surface, but I can’t wait to view them all. They seem to range from whimsical to sobering.

But like Austin Brown’s post says, the most intriguing aspect of the site is where they invite us to make our own predictions.

You can bet that I'll be adding my own two cents. Why not you?

The data is arranged along an eminently explorable timeline. A quick scan of the topics show that we have quite an array of concerns and predictions. Of course, many – perhaps most – of these things will happen differently, not at all, or at different times.

The point is to get us thinking. The future always feels so far out there, but it’s not. It starts right now.
