One thing in the back of my mind when I’m thinking about the impact of different generations is how to visualize it. USA Today recently took a stab at it. Their cool web-app does two things pretty well.
- It illustrates the concept of generational overlap.
- Invites you to see if the app can plot your position in time.
It does this by asking you one question in a number of categories. What toy did you have? What did you watch on TV? Stuff like that. Here’s how I did.
Not too shabby, considering the non-specificity of the questions themselves. I was actually born in 1973, but then, I inherited Tonka Trucks, which belonged to an earlier generation and skewed its evaluation. Give it a try. Let me know how accurately it predicted your birth year.

It was three years early on me, but I grew up in the UK, where I’m guessing most of their indicators arrived on a delay of 18mths-3years.
This fails a lot this isn’t even right about my date, and they should really update it so it can get it more accurate.
Or get it a little more accurate please
