A Very, Very, Very Fine House

We're finally done moving. Here are four bits of good news, mainly to prove that I'm not yet dead.

It feels like an eternity since I last wrote. In truth, it wasn’t that long ago, but moving really sucks the wind from my sails. Thankfully, we’re 95% completed. All the heavy lifting of bookcases, CRT-televisions, and way more stuff than we need (to say nothing of the books we do need), is finally completed. There are a few details left, such as cleaning the old place and properly unpacking and dressing up the new home. It’ll likely take months, but that’s expected.

The good news:

  • In the future, we hope to upgrade our cat for better home defense.

It’s a house! That’s right, no more apartment living for us. It’s got two floors and everything. Don’t get me wrong, the folks at Archstone manage their properties nicely; they were always pleasant and understanding. But, we were living in an allergenic nightmare. Cheap carpets and mold manufacturing windows made breathing a chore. This morning, for the first time in years, I woke up with the ability to breathe through my nose without wads of tissues.

  • There’s a neighborhood. Seriously, there are parks, good shopping, great bus access, wooded areas, and a few decent restaurants to boot. Our son can actually explore. This sure beats our last place, which mixed the irritation of a main highway with giant, dangerous parking lots surrounded by a swamp.
  • Rent first, lease later. The odds are very strong that we will eventually be purchasing this place, at which point we can improve the kitchen (which is still a bit small for my wife’s culinary masterpieces) and make other renovations that will allow us to feel just like grown-ups.
  • Our cat has adapted wonderfully. Last time, our move immediately followed the acquisition of our family cat. She didn’t handle that very well. This time, though, it took all of a day and a half before she was nudging her toys at my feet, begging for me to play catch. And she really loves stairs.

This is all a round about way of revealing that I’m still here and eager to keep writing for the handful of people that occasionally read this stuff. I don’t know how the hell my Feedburner count stays steady, but thanks for humoring me while I figure out what the hell the point of this thing is.
